How to cope with winter weather isolation

Here in Kansas City we recently experienced the on of the top 5 snowfalls in our history! Many people are huddled indoors, and although the mental image a big snowfall may bring up - reading a book under a fluffy blanket - may seem very cozy, winter weather can also bring about isolation and stress for many.

Here are some ideas to cope with feelings of loneliness this winter.

1) Find ways to connect socially indoors!

Kansas City is home to many amazing coffee shops. Why not reach out to a friend and ask for a coffee date this week?

Some of my favorite local spots are :

Second Best Coffee in Waldo

Chingu Coffee in KCMO

Oddly Correct on Troost

Summer Moon Coffee in Overland Park

Other indoor ideas for indoor social connection:

-Set up weekly or monthly video calls with family and friends

-Join a book club - a personal favorite.

Kansas City Book Club is a great option. Find it on Facebook.

Johnson County Book Groups. Link here

2) Find safe winter activities!

It is so important for our mental health to move our bodies regularly. This can be so tough during the winter.

Here are some ideas for indoor movement:

-Mall walking! Oak Park Mall is home to many happy mall walkers

-There are many community centers in the area with surprisingly affordable day passes, exercise classes, and even personal trainers. Lenexa Rec Center is a popular option.

-Join a gym. Regular, repeated classes are a perfect way to make new acquaintances that may just turn into friends. BLUSH fitness is just for women and provides childcare.

-Explore YoutTube workouts. When the snow is piled up outside YouTube workouts are a perfect way to move your body right in your living room. No excuses!

growwithjo is someone I often recommend to clients looking to move more often. She is so positive and has all levels of workouts.

3) Start at home!

It's long been popular for mental health therapists to recommend light therapy lamps. Theis home-based solution is especially important for those of you struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder from the shortened daylight hours. The best time to use these lights is in the morning between 9am-11am.

Other fun indoor ideas:

-Themed Dinner Parties. I've recently learned about cookbook book clubs! I think this is a great option to socialize right at home.

-Indoor hobbies. Winter is a great time to re-engage with your favorite hobbies. Reading, Crafting, Board Games, Baking, and more are perfect for your indoor enjoyments. Bonus points if your hobby of choice has a social component!

Teletherapy

Engaging in supportive, attuned mental health care is always an important coping skill. The thing I love about Teletherapy is that there are no snow days! As long as you have a good internet connection and privacy you can get support from your chosen professional.
